چکیده

We examine whether a cosmologically significant distribution of dark galaxy group or cluster-sized objects can have an optical depth for multiple imaging of distant background sources which is comparable to that from known galaxies while at the same time producing angular splittings of the same order of magnitude. Our purpose is to explore whether such objects could realistically account for some of the observed lenses. Modeling such systems as isothermal spheres with core radii, we find that independent of the cosmology (open, flat matter dominated, or flat cosmological constant dominated) an allowed parameter range exists which is comparable in velocity dispersion to that for known compact groups of galaxies, although the preferred core radii are somewhat smaller than that normally assumed for compact groups. Dark cluster-sized objects, on the other hand, cannot reproduce the observed lensing characteristics. If the one known Dark cluster were a good representative of such a distribution, most such objects would not produce multiple images. We also present a result for the angular splitting due to an isothermal sphere lens with non-zero core radius, extending earlier work of Hinshaw and Krauss (1987). Our results are expressed as contour plots for fixed lensing probabilities, and angular splittings. Current status of weak gravitational lensing

Weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by foreground structures has proven to be a powerful tool to study the mass distribution in the universe. Nowadays, attention has shifted from clusters of galaxies to the statistical properties of the large scale structures and the halos of (field) galaxies. These applications have become feasible with the advent of panoramic cameras on 4m class te...

Gravitational Lensing in Modified Gravity and the Lensing of Merging Clusters without Dark Matter

Gravitational lensing in a modified gravity (MOG) is derived and shown to describe lensing without postulating dark matter. The recent data for merging clusters identified with the interacting cluster 1E0657-56 is shown to be consistent with a weak lensing construction based on MOG without exotic dark matter. e-mail: [email protected]

Weak Gravitational Lensing by a Sample of X-ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies – Iii. Serendipitous Weak Lensing Detections of Dark and Luminous Mass Concentrations

In the course of a weak gravitational lensing survey of 39 clusters of galaxies, covering a total sky area of ∼ 1 square degree, we have serendipitously discovered mass concentrations in the fields of A1705 and A1722 which are most probably not associated with the main cluster target. By combining weak lensing information with twocolor galaxy photometry in fields centered on our sample clusters...

The Detection of the Gravitational Lens- Ing of Supernovae

The weak gravitational lensing of high redshift type Ia supernovae has the potential of probing the structure of matter on galaxy halo scales. This is complementary to the weak lensing of galaxies which probes structure of larger scales. There are already several organized searches for these supernovae being carried out for the purposes of cosmological parameter estimation. A method is proposed...

Dark Matter and Gravitational Lensing

The last decade has shown a considerable development of gravitational lensing for cosmology because it probes the amount and the nature of dark matter, and provides information on the density parameter Ω, the cosmological constant Λ and the Hubble constant Ho. Therefore, gravitational lensing can constrain the cosmological scenario which gave birth to the Universe as it appears today. The ongoi...

Weak gravitational lensing is responsible for the shearing and magnification of the images of high-redshift sources due to the presence of intervening mass. Since the lensing effects arise from deflections of the light rays due to fluctuations of the gravitational potential, they can be directly related to the underlying density field of the large-scale structures. Weak gravitational surveys ar...
